{DIY} Probiotic Hand Sanitizer

16301.jpgA lot of hand sanitizers on the market contain harsh chemicals and can be very drying and irritating to the skin.  Even many of the natural sanitizers contain alcohols that, while not toxic can be rough on the skin, especially if you have dry skin or skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

But worry not, because you can make your own organic, nontoxic and gentle hand sanitizer that's also extremely effective.

One of my customers and friends, Dani Abrahams, is a biological chemist & environmental toxicologist who looks at bloodwork all day and really understands the effect synthetic chemicals in personal care have on people's health.  She was looking for a nontoxic hand sanitizer, and not finding one she really liked created her own.  And, she even tested it under a microscope to make sure it really did work.  She's graciously allowed me to share her recipe with you.

We all know that probiotics benefit our health by using good bacteria to "eat" the bad bacteria.  So why not use probiotics to get rid of bacteria on your hands?

Dani's hand sanitizer uses only 3 ingredients:

That's it! Combine the BioPure and water according to the directions on the BioPure bottle.  Add a few drops of lemongrass essential oil.  (Lemongrass is a strong oil so don't go overboard).  The lemongrass serves 2 purposes.  It adds a nice aroma to the hand sanitizer combined with the vanilla smell of the BioPure and it is also an effective anti-microbal, anti-bacterial (including MRSA), & anti-fungal.
Poor the mixture into a small spray bottle and keep it in your purse, backpack, diaper bag, or gym bag.
Note: Always be cautious using essential oils on children.  They are potent and can be too much for young bodies.  Check with a qualified aromatherapist to determine if lemongrass is appropriate for your child, go very lightly or consider leaving it out and just using the BioPure.

Update: August 9, 2011:

From Dani: "It lasts about 2 weeks. I reuse the small bottles and typically go through it faster than that. As for the Lemongrass, no worries there. Water is harder on probiotics than Lemongrass. Maybe I forgot to tell you but I add a tiny bit of Vit. E to it as well?"  If you can find organic Vitamin E I'd recommend that as otherwise it's likely GMO.
