Stunning Eco Friendly Ski Resorts

Posted by James HApprentice Friday, November 18 2011 0 comments

More and more ski resorts are beginning to take notice of the importance of being eco friendly. After all, who has more to lose from global warming than a ski resort?

The fact is, our snow is in danger. Whilst we are experiencing higher levels of precipitation leading to increased snow fall, this is equally affecting the lower level resorts - many of which may not be in existence by 2020. Although most research has shown that the real effects to the ski industry will start to impact during the latter part of this century, many resorts are acting on this now.

If you are concerned about your skiing carbon footprint look for a resort that is energy efficient and conscious of the environment. Remember, being mindful of the environment does not mean you can't still enjoy a luxury ski holiday. The Ski Club of Great Britain publishes a green resort guide outlining exactly how each resort conducts itself environmentally.

A key factor to consider in reducing your carbon footprint is the way in which you travel - train travel can dramatically reduce your CO2 emissions.

Check out our selection of eco friendly resorts, each of them has been ISO14001 approved, a worldwide standard of environmental management. Six resorts on at least four continents are known to be working towards obtaining the certification or to have already achieved it.

Kaprun, Austria

Offering an extensive skiing area, this family friendly resort prides itself on its attention to preserving the environment. The resort uses renewable energy sources, such as solar, to power its lifts and carries out environmental works annually, including tree and grass planting by using eco friendly techniques.

Avoriaz, France

The high altitude and north facing slopes have given this resort a great snow record over the years. Built in the 1960s, the resort was constructed with environmental principles from the start. The roofs of the buildings are designed to ensure maximum insulation and the resort uses only electricity for heating rather than the more polluting oil. Avoriaz also replants as many trees as it cuts down when tracing new ski runs. Further to this, the car-free village uses a water filtration system that doesn't use chlorine.

Saas Fee, Switzerland

This famously car-free resort was awarded the status of "Energy Town" in June 2002. This label is awarded to towns and communities which go to exceptional lengths to implement energy and traffic policies in their community. The area's slopes are high and glaciated, which reduces the need for snow cannons.

Aspen, USA

One of the most well known ski resorts in the world, Aspen's environmental commitment is reflected in their generation of hydro and solar power. The resort employs a strong green buildings policy, including the build of certified energy efficient golf buildings, restaurants, and employee housing. The resort pays particular attention to fundraising, with all profits going to local and environmental causes, like clean water and air.

Once you've researched the resort you would like to go to, check out what chalets available and start to plan your perfect (energy conscious!) trip.
