Americans Are Taking Breakfast Seriously

oatmeal.jpgHave Americans improved the way they eat breakfast – "the most important meal of the day"? Well, according to The Food Channel, we have, at least in terms of our healthy choices.

Oatmeal tops the list as one of the new popular breakfasts around these parts, with both Starbucks and McDonald's recently putting it on their menus. But just because McDonald's serves you oatmeal doesn't mean it's healthy – the fast food chain packs it with sugar and other processed ingredients. If you're going to tune into this new breakfast fad, try to make it at home with whole ingredients (steel cut oats, milk (or soy/almond/coconut milk, as well as fresh fruit), or make sure the place that's making it for you isn't putting anything you can't pronounce into it.

Eggs are also apparently "making a comeback," since a big recall last year. Again, loading your eggs with cheese and bacon probably isn't the best way to get your protean intake for the day, but filling an omelet with veggies and other healthy options will definitely keep you satisfied into the afternoon.

Speaking of satisfied, Americans seem to be eating not one, but two breakfasts these days. We start off with something small (juice, coffee, a piece of fruit perhaps?), and then later on in the morning we go for "power bars, yogurt, granola and possibly a second coffee." Everything but the second coffee sounds great to me. If I had two coffees in the span of 4 hours, I would probably get so wired I'd try to make my computer my second breakfast.

It's hard to tell if these and other breakfast trends in the article are based on any scientific fact, but at least there's some evidence that Americans are starting to take their health seriously - or maybe just their oatmeal.
