Okay – the economy isn't coming back as fast as we all hoped it would. Things are still expensive and there isn't enough money to go around, and yet, we still want to eat healthy. Also, we want our pets to eat healthy. We want to feel good and we want our pets to feel good and we don't want to break the bank getting there. Is it possible? It is. It just comes down to planning, and a little home cooking.
A new article on Mint.com claims that while making your own pet food and treats may take more time than simply hiking to the store to buy them, it'll save you some cash in the long run. Plus, what dog isn't down for some good, healthy people food?
Before the article goes into much detail, it does warn that pet owners should talk to their vet about switching their dog's traditional diet to one of a more home-cooked variety, which makes perfect sense. If you don't know what you're doing, don't do it – plain and simple.
But once you get the okay from your vet, creating some delicious dinners shouldn't be hard. Mixing a bit of store-bought food with a topper like "simmered sweet potatoes, carrots and apples, seasoned with a dash of cinnamon," is one option outlined in the article, as are homemade treats made from "1/3 cups oatmeal, two mashed ripe bananas, one cup peanut butter and a half-cup chopped peanuts."
When creating these and other delicious meals for your pet (seriously, I'd eat this stuff), make sure that you stay away from human junk food and understand what sorts of things dogs can't digest well (such as grapes and onions). It's also a good idea to become educated on supplements – which may cost a little extra but can go a long way in keeping Fido super healthy and happy.
