Puma may have gotten the ball rolling when they debuted their "Clever Little Bag" last year, but Adidas wants everyone to know that Puma isn't the only German sports lifestyle company concerned about the environment.
Many people will undoubtedly criticize Adidas for the somewhat meager-sounding pledge. The company plans to reduce their overall environmental impact by 15% by 2015. That may sound like small potatoes, but I love that Adidas is being real and honest -- with themselves and the public.
They don't seem like they're trying to pull the green wool over the eyes of their consumers and make the brand seem more eco-friendly than it really is.
So what are their 2015 plans? GreenBiz says that Adidas' Environmental Strategy 2015 includes,
Within that [15% reduction by 2015] are many more goals covering product design, sourcing, marketing, company operations and other points in product life cycles. One area being targeted is cotton, with Adidas aiming to have 100 percent of the cotton it uses meet the Better Cotton Initiative's standards by 2018 (40 percent is planned to meet the standards by 2015).
Other areas being addressed are leather sources, cutting the number of coloring dyes it uses by half, and reducing its water and energy usage as well as its waste production.
What do you think about Adidas' pledge? Do you think it's a good start or not nearly a big enough step?
