Plymouth Rock Studios is taking that leap and claiming itself to be the first movie studio to be completely eco-friendly.  With help from Gensler, a leading global architecture, design, planning and strategic consulting firm renowned for its commitment to green design, Plymouth Rock Studios has a LEED certification to go ahead with their plan of being completely carbon neutral.

The studio’s principle of responsibility extends beyond the design elements of the facility to a larger philosophy of bioregionalism.   They will strive for regional support for everything from the food that is served in the commissary to the materials used to build the studio.  Their stages will each be equipped with solar panels on the roof, insolated walls to reduce the use of energy to heat or cool the studio plus an energy monitor will be placed in each stage to record how much a production uses that day.

ARUP, a globally recognized leader in green technology, has formed a new division called Zero Plus that will work directly on a new project for the studio called Stage Zero. Still in the planning phases, the vision for Stage Zero is to build the world’s first carbon neutral sound stage for film and television production.

They plan on bringing more productions to Massachusetts with a studio like this.  It will cut down cost on productions dramatically and will hopefully open the eyes of some of the big studios out in Hollywood to follow in suit.

I was at a seminar where they discussed this studio and it seems very interesting. The guy who was representing them went as far to say that they are only buying furniture that is 100% green, and only buying food from local farmers, when possible. As a film maker I find this to be an exciting for practical reasons too since they will be the largest studio on the east coast. Companies on the east coast currently go west for production because there are no large studios out east, and by building a green studio, Plymouth Rock stands to make a nice profit, thus proving that being green doesn't necessarily coincide with making no money

I think its very exciting to see studios moving in this direction! You mentioned the project is just in planning stages and I hope the additional up front costs don't derail their plans in the future. I would love for you to give updates on this project as it moves into the next stage.
