Owner of Segway Company Dies While Riding One

main_segway.jpgAnd here I was thinking those things never tipped over.

James Heselden, the 62-year-old owner of the company that makes those weird Segway vehicles was found dead on Monday after police discovered his body and a broken Segway in northern England's River Wharfe. Heselden reportedly fell 30 feet off a cliff while riding his slow-moving alternative vehicle.

"Police said a witness had reported seeing a man fall Sunday over a 30-foot drop into the river near Boston Spa, 140 miles north of London," reports MNN.com. The incident is not believed to be suspicious.

Heselden bought the Segway company in December, 2009 and was known for his hard knock younger years (the high school drop-out worked as a coal miner before turning to business) and philanthropic personality, recently giving "10 million pounds" to the Leeds Community Foundation in England.

It's sort of impossible to tell how Heselden met his untimely end off that cliff, especially when one considers that those Segways move at a very slow pace. Maybe the ground crumbled beneath him. Maybe he just wasn't paying attention. Whatever the reason, we lost a good man last Sunday – even if he did have questionable taste in vehicles.
