Amazing! Apple TV is green! Sing it from the rooftops! But first ... what's Apple TV?

For those who don't know, Apple TV converts Internet video from your computer and projects it through your TV screen.  Remember that Youtube video of the baby Panda sneezing? Well, with Apple TV, you can watch it over and over again on your TV, rather than having to sit at your computer for hours on end. It’s basically your cable company’s worst nightmare, and it’s available now from the Apple Store for $99.

While it’s not the first device to do this, it is by far the most environmentally sound device of its kind. Apple TV pulls less than 6 watts from your wall. That’s less than just about everything else in your home. It can rent and project a movie from Netflix, and yet during sleep mode, it uses less power than a nightlight.

While the Apple TV is very well put together, there are only 6 pieces, and each one is relatively easy to replace or repair. Most of the intricately networked high-tech stuff is on one panel. This means that if one part of that panel gets fried, so does the rest. But, it also allows the rest of the device to be much easier to maintain.

A standard cable box can pull anywhere between 25-30 watts. Your DVD and Blu-Ray pull about 18 watts apiece. A satellite converter tops out at roughly 35. If the shows and movies you want to watch are available on Itunes, Netflix, or any other compatible online video source, you could replace all of these devices with the Apple TV, and not skip a beat. More importantly, you’ll be saving yourself thousands of kilowatt-hours of electricity every year.
