It’s that time of year when you’re washing your hands more often and keeping your distance from people who are sneezing or coughing. You’ve probably got a stash of common cold medications and fizzy drinks claiming to fight off illness, and you’re likely addicted to hand sanitizer. But there’s a simple way to prevent yourself from getting sick without having to avoid social situations or spending money on gimmicky products - eat the right foods. If your body is healthy you have a slim chance of getting sick, and to keep it in prime condition make sure the following foods are in your diet.

Bell Peppers are loaded with vitamin C (they have more than oranges), which helps keep your immune system strong.

Oranges are well-known for being high in vitamin C, but they also contains important nutrients that play an important role in our health, like magnesium, potassium, folate, vitamin B6.

Mushrooms have selenium, an antioxidant that protects your body’s cells, and zinc, which is thought to be critical for immune function.

Squash and Pumpkin are rich in vitamin A, which is needed for a strong respiratory system.

Avocados have vitamin E, which increases resistance to sickness and reduces the risk of upper respiratory infections.

Green Tea is full of antioxidants, which is known to enhance the immune system.

Garlic has been shown to kill viruses, and acts as a decongestant. Have it raw whenever possible, as it is less potent when cooked.

Ginger is known to help fight off infection and can help treat coughs and fevers.

Other foods that will keep your immune system strong:

  • Apricots (vitamin A)
  • Broccoli & cauliflower (vitamin C)
  • Cabbage (vitamin C)
  • Carrots (vitamin A)
  • Clementines (vitamin C)
  • Lemon (keeps your body alkaline)

Don’t forget to drink lots of water, which is always vital to maintaining the health of your body.
