I was raised on tap water. I remember that sweet toothpaste and chlorine taste like I remember my grandma’s homemade brownies. I remember running home from school, sticking my head under the faucet, and just inhaling that stuff till my stomach ached. I thought, as we all did, that this is how water is supposed to taste. It’s supposed to taste like aluminum. It’s designed that way. It wasn’t until I tasted my first sip of bottled water that this notion was shattered.

“What’s … what’s this?” I thought. “Why isn’t it bubbling inside my mouth? Where are the flavor crystals?”

Bottled water quickly ruined tap water for me. It wasn’t until the godsend of water filtration that I was able to get off them. Now, I keep a giant filter near me at all times. Cups are for the week. I dump that filtered clear goodness down my throat like a barbarian chugging on a flagon of mead. I am thus conserving quite a bit of plastic, but not as much as I could be …

Phoenix has created a series of stainless steal water filters that use ceramic cartridges to remove the contaminants from your drink. No plastic is involved. This is good for a few reasons: 1) Ceramic is biodegradable. Plastic is not. 2) The stainless steel body is designed to last a lifetime. Plastic filter bodies need to be replaced after about 5 years, due to the fact that they’re treated with hazardous chemicals during their construction. 3) The “Spirit” ceramic cartridge lasts for 6 months, meaning no need to replace it every month. The Spirit just requires a little bit of cleaning every so often.

The stats are simple: The Phoenix filter removes over 100 different tap-water contaminants along with 99.99% of all bacteria. It contains no plastic, and offers a much more positive effect on the environment. It’s easily the greenest water filter.
