Thursday Pet Spotlight: Man Gets 8 Years in Prison For Killing Family Pit Bull

pit_bull_2.jpgA lot of people believe we should treat crimes against animals just like crimes against people; if you hurt or kill a pet in a vicious, cruel way, you should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Right now, the justice system doesn't exactly punish animal homicide the same way it punishes human homicide, but an 8-year sentence for a New Mexico man for "extreme cruelty" to a family pit bull is a step in the right direction in terms of extending basic rights to our furry loved ones.

Teddy Sexton, a dude with an already dubious criminal history, pleaded guilty this week to a horrific crime against a pit bull that reportedly bit a child at a party. If you're not interested in reading how the dog died, I'd skip over the next paragraph if I were you.

Sexton apparently tried to cut the dog's throat with a knife, and when that didn't work, decapitated the animal with a chainsaw. Officers were tipped off to this disgusting act after a Children,Youth and Families Department worker was informed that a few children were having nightmares of the incident – even though Sexton and his lawyers claim no children were around when he committed the crime.

I'm no judge or jury, but I hope this guy sits in jail for the entirety of his sentence. No matter how dangerous you think an animal may be, there's simply no reason to take its life in such a brutal and inhumane way. If Teddy Sexton had done this to a human, he'd be shoved into jail for life and highlighted on an episode of Law and Order before his sentence even began.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go watch an hour of cute puppy videos on YouTube to get this story out of my brain.

This is an outrageous miscarriage of justice! Had this guy killed a human instead of a dog, he may have gotten 8 years, but probably not. This is what is travesty is proof of a world gone mad. The writer of this article is a rabid animal lover - that's fine, but he is also a people hater. That is going to be our downfall as a society. Just like Hitler - loved animals and nature - hated people. Teddy no more deserves 8 years in jail for killing this dog, than any murderer deserves less than 80 years in jail for killing a human. The justice system is so screwed up and people like the writer are the very reason. Sickening.

Nissa Nanla - I am shocked and dismayed that you could possibly write something so disgusting and ridiculous and leave your name on it - if you're not a relative or paid supporter of Teddy Sexton, I'll eat my hat. How is it possible for you to think that someone who does something so heinous doesn't deserve 8 years in prison? Because it was an animal does it make Sexton any less disturbed and psychotic? You should be absolutely ASHAMED of yourself!!!

if this man gets 8 yrs. its what he deserves for what he did to this poor dog that he abused and helped make this dog aggressive! so, this man deserves 8 yrs and more for killing this dog!
its people like this who giving these dogs a bad name. we owned a pit bull and he was loving and gentle, so, I know its the owner and not the breed!
so, blame that evil man. not the dog.

nissa nanla, how is this guy who wrote the post like Hitler, and a rabid animal lover that doesn't give a damn about people? Your post is confusing me. This guy is just telling the story, and he didn't even insult the dog killer once in the story, and this man did decapitate the animal with a knife and chainsaw, so I think he'll deserve the 8 years he'll get in prison! And since you care about people so much, people who abuse and kill animals like that are more likely to do that to people too, so it's a good thing he'll be out of society for a while and have time to think about what he did. AND, if someone were to kill a person like that, I'm sure they would either get life in prison or more than likely, the death sentence. So, your comment about if he killed a person like that, that he wouldn't have gotten as much time in prison for killing the dog also doesn't make sense.

nissa nanla you obviously are not an animal lover. That man was a depraved individual. If he thought the dog was dangerous then he should have put it in a cage and taken it to animal control where if necessary it could have been put down humanely. With an owner that psycho it is no wonder the dog bit someone. And I am here to tell you that there are occasions when dogs bite that they are provoked or just plain defending themselves. We do not get information on WHY the dog bit someone. The man was crazy and I would rather have the dog in my neighborhood than the crazy man that might turn his anger on his neighbor or kid or wife next. Most likely he already has.
