If you're new to the gluten-free diet it may seem like a major commitment to make all the changes to your lifestyle. Luckily, the diet is pretty mainstream and options are available at almost everyday grocery store and restaurant. But one place that is unlikely to have been educated on the gluten-free restrictions is your favorite bar. Yes, that's right, even alcohol can contain gluten. However, if you learn about the options you can usually find something that will allow you to join in the fun when you're out.
Generally, wine is gluten-free but cross contamination can sometimes occur in the processing or barrel storage, so it's best to check with the manufacturer if possible. However, wine coolers are not gluten-free because they contain barely malt.
Fortunately, most liqueur's are gluten-free. You can safely enjoy:
- bourbon
- gin
- rum
- rye & scotch whiskeys
- sake
- tequila
- vodka
However, be wary of coolers and mixed beverages - check the ingredients if you can, otherwise it's best to skip them.
As for beer, there are a few companies that make great alternatives, since most beers are made with barely or other glutenous grains. Look for products made with rice, buckwheat, and/or sorghum. Here are some brands that are relatively easy to find in liquer stores and markets (check their websites for locations):
- Bard's Tale
- Greens
- New Grist
- O'Brien
- RedBridge (made by Anheuser Busch)
- Samuel Smith
Most ciders are gluten-free, but check the label to confirm before drinking - some are made with barely.
