Garbage Bags

Garbage Bags from the Store

We have all heard that we should not accept plastic bags from the store or we should recycle those bags. But if we use those plastic bags as garbage bags and send them to the landfill, is that bad? My family has never used garbage bags that you purchase from the store. Instead, we have always used the bags that we get from the grocery store.

Compostable Garbage Bags

Is there any point in using a compostable bag as a garbage bag? It will just end up going to a landfill, where nothing decomposes.

I think that the point of using a compostable trash bag rather than a conventional plastic trash bag is that it is made out of more eco-friendly components that break down a lot faster in the landfill. I recently bought Perf brand "Go Green" trash bags because they claim that they're the first biodegradable disposable plastic bags to break down in 2 years time with no toxins. I want to believe that their claim is true...I hope they're just not greenwashing -- http://www.greenwala.com/my_groups/all/104-GREEN-INTO-ACTION-A-THINK-TANK-TO-IMPLEMENT-REAL-WORLD-CHANGES/topics/441

I hope that company isn't greenwashing either.

I think compostable trash bags would work as long as the trash in landfills are allowed to decompose. A lot of landfills in the U.S. don't have access to moisture or oxygen, so the trash doesn't decompose as quickly as it normally would.
