Homemade Soy Candles with Peppermint Oil

One of my favorite Christmas decorations is my candle tree. It is made out of metal and holds 18 votive candles. Since I don't use petroleum-based candles any more I don't get to use it as much as I'd like as natural candles are often more expensive. But since it's Christmas I decided to pull it out. And, since I no longer have votive candles I decided to make some.

A couple of years ago my niece came to visit and really wanted to make candles. So I bought some microwavable soy wax flakes and other supplies. I used the left over wax and supplies so I didn't have to buy anything.

The nice thing about this wax is you can make it with a Pyrex measuring cup and a microwave.

Our theme is peppermint (red and white) so I made ½ in white and ½ in red.  Since the soy wax dries white it meant I only had to add color to ½ the candles

I also added peppermint essential oil to the wax to add some festive yet safe fragrance. Admittedly, I don't know what the color blocks are made from, but even if they aren't totally natural, overall these candles are much healthier that most in the store.

And, they look great, too.
