Bicycle stations have been popping up all over the world in an effort to encourage more commuters and city dwellers to embrace the carbon-free and often invigorating mode of transportation. Brisbane, Australia's Green Pod has just upped the ante by offering a mini parking zone that doubles as an on-the-go shower/changing room system. Available in a single unit (which accomodates 10 bikes) or a double unit (which accomodates twice the amount of bikes), the standard features of all Green Pods are as follows:
- 2.4 meters wide by 5 meters long
- only registered swipe card users can gain access
- operates on a 12V DC system that can be powered by solar panels on the roof
- parking zone offers spots for 10 - 20 bikes
- motion sensor activated LED lighting
- electronic locking system
- timed solar hot water shower system (1 - 2 showers total, depending on the model)
- changing rooms (1 - 2 total, depending on the model) equipped with lockers
- grey water treatment unit discharges grey water into local landscaping materials
- detection system automatically locks unit when not in use to self-clean
Would you feel safe using a system like this? Do you think that it would encourage you to ride your bicycle more frequently? Can you see any drawbacks to the Green Pod?
