Dental Floss Packaging

I was just thinking about how much packaging goes into floss. My dentist typically gives us the sample-sized floss boxes, and my mom just bought floss (it contained 6 floss boxes, 43.7 yards each). It would be much better for me to have a huge floss package. Otherwise, it's relatively easy for me to lose floss. Also, I don't need the floss packages to be that tiny and portable because the only place I floss is in the bathroom (I am not the type of person that typically carries floss around).

I decided to search for a large sized dental package since I am not that picky about the kind of floss I use. Here is what I found: Glide has a large-sized package with a whopping 218.8 yards in it. Furthermore, you can even get refills for your floss package! I am not aware of any eco-friendly floss out there, but this seems to be a good alternative (for now) for all the tiny floss packages we get.

Here is a link for more information about the product: http://www.dentist.net/glide-largesize.asp

Tell me if there are any better alternatives out there! This was just a quick search. Laughing

    Hi Sherry,

Each time I go to the dentist, I pass on their microscopic samples of floss for the very same reason -- I'd much rather have a ginormous pack and be set for two years. Floss seems like such an insignificantly small material to throw away, but between the packaging and the floss itself, that's a lot of plastic, most of which I doubt is ever recycled. I don't even know if it CAN be recycled.

You asked about eco-friendly options, and the answer is YES, there are quite a few out there. Normally, they are made out of organic cotton or hemp string that is saturated with beeswax or another biodegradable material. I've tried about 4 different brands and I feel bad for saying this but I pretty much hated every single one of them. Believe me...I really "tried" to like them, but they kept on getting stuck inbetween my teeth and by the time I wrestled them out, I thought I was going to pop a tooth out in the process. Maybe my teeth are a little more crammed together than "normal" people's teeth, but for me, plastic floss that effortlessly glides through is my guilty eco-sin.

I'd love to hear everyone else's view on this, and if there are "glidable" but green alternatives that anyone can recommend, I'm all ears.
