Unlike the car industry, the boating industry has yet to go green crazy. Boating, but more specifically yachting, isn't just environmentally (and monetarily) taxing, but sometimes it almost seems as if boat makers are intentionally trying to be non-green.

But who cares, right? Boating is crazy fun.

According to EcoFriend, it may actually turn out to be crazy green in the not too distant future after all (and I'm not just talking about hydrogen powered flying boats either). My favorite of EcoFriend's top 10 solar powered boat concepts is the SunCat23 Catamaran (pictured above).

EcoFriend says,

Developed by Horizon Yachts, the SunCat23 Catamaran incorporates four solar panels capable of producing a whopping 760W of power to fuel a 2.8KW electric motor. The sturdy catamaran with a capacity of 12 passengers is capable of achieving a top speed of 6 knots. The fully charged battery pack can additionally power the boat for a day trip, even on a cloudy day.

A good friend of mine has a 41 foot cabin cruiser that costs around $1000 to fill up with gas, so an on-board battery pack (charged by those solar panels, nonetheless) that provides enough juice for an entire day trip would make a huge difference in both the eco-friendliness and monetary cost involved in owning a boat or yacht.

Are you a boater? How do you minimize your impact on the water and environment when scooting around your favorite body of water?
