The term organic is well-known - whether or not people buy organic foods, they certainly know what they are...well, for the most part. But very few are familiar with the definition of wildcrafted, even those in the health-world. It's important to understand what this word means, especially if you're concerned with the environments in which your food is grown.

Wildcrafted is a term that describes uncultivated plants that have been harvested from their natural, or "wild" habitat, wherever they may be found, rather than cultivating them in a garden or greenho use. In many cases only the branches or flowers from plants are taken and the living plant is left, only taking what is needed, so plenty remains to continue the supply. If it is necessary to take the whole plant, seeds of the plant are scattered over the area from where the plant was taken.

In many cases wildcrafted harvesting is regulated by the Organic Food Production Act of 1990. Harvesters must designate the area they are harvesting and provide a three-year history of the area that shows no prohibited substances have been applied. Ideally, plants should be gathered with respect for the environment, protecting the earth and any endangered species in the area. Unfortunately some species have been harvested almost to extinction or habitats have been destroyed, so make sure to read labels and look for the words "responsibly" or "carefully" wildcrafted for the minimal environmental impact.

Keep in mind that it is quite difficult for companies to sell truly wildcrafted products because of the limit quantities of finding these plants in the wild. Therefore, some products may try to mimic the process in a man-made field. Also beware of certain products that are over marketed - some plants are over harvested almost to extinction, so make sure to do your research and avoid purchasing ingredients that are ecologically threatened.

As for health, wildcrafted items can be superior to organic because they are never sprayed with anything/not subject to the chemicals and fertilizers and are not grown under commercial conditions or assistance from humankind, so the result is very pure, just as nature intended. Many eastern practitioners believe that wildcrafted plants are healthier for consumption because they are grown in natural conditions, which gives them vital energy.

Ultimately, there isn't enough data outlining the health or environmental differences between wildcrafted and organic products, but if handled by a reputable company that cares there is certainly a benefit to buying either. If a product is not available organic, now you know that you can also look for a wildcrafted option that meets similar standards.
