Why Genetically Modified Food is About to Become More Dangerous

chfa_03_img0699.jpgWhile most of us understand that genetically modified food isn't necessarily the best way to go, a combination of its cheap price and our lack of knowledge on what is genetically modified and what isn't tends to keep many of us from avoiding it all together. What's the big deal?, we think. It's just a few vegetables.

"The big deal" may become more obvious as time goes on, however, if a story from NaturalNews.com is to be believed. "Superweeds," weeds that have become resistant to chemical pesticides sprayed on genetically modified foods, are becoming such a problem that certain chemical companies are campaigning for an even harsher 2,4-D herbicide to be sprayed on crops.

"Rather than admit they are responsible for the problem," NaturalNews staff writer Jonathan Beson writes, "agri-giants like Dow and Monsanto say that using different pesticides and herbicides will help solve the problem. But such a suggestion could not be further from the truth. Treating plants with increasingly higher levels and more potent concoctions of toxic chemicals is a recipe for disaster, and one that will only make the superweed problem worse."

The story goes on to say that if 2,4-D is used on large scale crops, consumers could be exposed to "dangerously high levels of the toxin, which in turn causes autoimmune disorders, cell destruction (apoptosis), nerve damage, metabolic dysfunction, and other serious problems."

Yet another reason why buying organic and local is not only vital to our earth's health, but our own health as well.

I wasn't aware of the side effects of GM foods. I guess, as said, organic foods are a better choice.
