One big solution to healthier eating and living more sustainably is to grow your own food, but this practice seems daunting for most people. Even though it is easy to start a small garden in a windowsill, balcony, fire escape, rooftop, or backyard, many people don't want to take the time to learn how to start the process and are afraid it will take too much time and energy. Luckily, there are some shortcuts - check out the following products that make growing your own food easy.

Aer oGardens are well known because of their television ads and are widely available to purchase. Simply take seed pods, place them in the appliance, add water, and turn on the light! Depending on the plant, you'll have fresh food in no time and it will take just a few minutes a week. *eco downside - the appliance is made from plastic and it uses electricity - learn more about their sustainability here.

Growums are targeted at kids to make growing food fun, so much fun in fact that you'll want to buy them for yourself! Choose from garden kits like Taco, Pizza, Stir Fry, Ratatouille, and Salad. Their website is animated with silly characters and educational videos to teach kids. *eco downside - the pellets are made from peat, a non-renewable resource

Back to the Roots makes a easy-to-grow mushroom kit that will yield in as little as 10 days. The soil inside the boxes is 100% recycled coffee grounds - safe & sustainable!

These are just a few examples of the products on the market - do a web search for "vegetable growing kit" and you'll find lots of options.

Keep in mind that the most sustainable way to grow your own food is to buy some pots, soil, and some seeds and do it all from scratch - it's not as hard as it sounds! But the kits above are a great place to start - it's all about baby steps.
