Member, JIji Y, asked a question in her status update regarding plastic bottles.  Below is my response:

I am very passionate about reducing our dependence on plastic.  Here are a couple of links for you to read regarding this subject.

Article on Bottle water:

My Blog on Sigg Bottles:

Sigg bottles for purchase:

Klean Kanteen bottles for purchase:

With the Klean Kanteen's wide mouth style you can add ice easily.  Sigg doesn't have that option yet.

Kuodo's to you Meena! Jiji Y I too am very passionate about not using plastic bottles or any other plastic. I know longer use plastic bottles, and have very limited plastic of any sort in my home. I began reducing it because of the effects on the environment. Thereafter, learned about the health factors associated with plastics, and decided to eliminate as much as possible from my home.If you go to my 'blogs' on Greenwala, and read the one titled "Ewwww Plastics, No More!" you can read about the healths risks.

^Thank you Sandy! I'll go read those right away. And thank you Meena for the articles! I knew plastic was bad for the environment and for my health but I had no idea just how bad it was.

Are the Sigg bottles and the Klean Kanteen bottles sold in stores? And if I was to look in stores for bottles, then what features/characteristics should I be looking for?

I have both the Sigg and Klean Kanteen bottles that an ardent environmentalist friend of mine gave them to me. As indicated by Sandy Spell, the plastic bottles are very bad for the nature and also for our health. So no plastic is used in our house. Even at the airports, we carry empty bottles through the security check points and then fill them up with water from the water drinking coolers. No reason to have plastic water bottles.

Another bit of information about plastic water bottles - On Clark Howard show four days ago, I heard him mention that a town in Australia by the name of Boondun (spellings not sure of ?) has decided to totally ban all sales of plastic water bottles in the town. This would be the very first instance that a municipality would ban any sale of plastic bottles within the city. I hope other places would also start considering restrictions on excessive use of plastic water bottles.

Surinder I believe that the city of San Francisco banned the sale of plastic bottles within government buildings. I don't think they have gone as far as banning it from the city as yet.

Jiji Y, You can buy the bottles at Whole Foods, REI, and I'm sure many other retailers. You can buy online through Greenwala which is one of the ways I bought mine. I know that Sigg is aluminum manufactured and Klean Kanteen is stainless steel. I am not sure about the virtue of each item but know that anything is better than plastic. Good Luck and I am happy to answer any questions!
