bastoy.1189720621.jpgIn Bastoy Prison in Norway, the prison is situated on an island where the prisioners are responsible for the farming, fishing and have a large array of duties.  This is an open prison system where they are given keys to their rooms not locked into a cell.  There are a list of rules they must obey to stay at this prison.  If they do not adhere to the rules there is a 3 stikes they are out and back into a traditional closed jail system.  These prisoners vary in crimes from murder, drug smuggling to rapists.  With only 115 prisoners and Somehow they manage to keep things peaceful and work in an orderly way.  Is this a way to humanize criminals before they are released back into the regular population?

I've never heard of Bastoy Prison but it seems like they're onto something. I'd really be interested to read statistics on how many residents have tried to break out and how many blew through their 3 strikes policy. With that being said, I think that participating in outdoor activities (even if they are physically demanding) is far more desirable than being stuck in a cell for all of your waking and sleeping hours. Norway seems to really understand what can soothe the savage beast -- working the land can cure all sorts of problems and make anyone feel like they have a sense of purpose. I think it's a very good move.

Only 12 people broke out in 10 years and they have a call and let us know policy. Kind of strange but I suppose it beats living life in a closed prison system. There are only 69 guards during the day and 5 at night. I heard this prison was in the movie Sicko. I haven't seen it but came across this prison and thought the concept was interesting. Maybe they'll reopen Alcatraz with this concept.
