Sure, the inmates' uniforms are still bright orange, but the prison itself is going green. (Come on, green jumpsuits would be way too close to prison camouflage, ya know?)
The Tennessean says,
The new Metro building is Tennessee’s first LEED-certified, green detention center, slated to house female inmates for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office in September. The Correction Corporation of America will operate it.
The sheriff’s office will send local women sentenced from one to six years to the 256-bed medium security CCA/Metro Detention Facility. The 40,000-square-foot county-owned building came in under $10 million. State money and grants paid for the project, which was completed this month.
A local representative went on to say that making state-owned "institutional" buildings that operate 24/7 more sustainable is a growing trend that just makes more sense. He said that the ongoing operations within them make the facilities "energy hogs".
Being that I am a Nashvillian, I may see if I can get an interview with the staff and some video from inside of the new "green" jail in Nashville, TN.
