iStock_000014400217XSmall.jpgSummer is officially here in the northern hemisphere.  And, if you haven't already done so it's time to re-evaluate your skin care and cosmetics for the changing of the season.  With more humidity, sun and heat the same products you used all winter may be too much for summer.  Here are a few things you may want to look at and see if they are still working for you this summer:

Skin Care - Many people find they need a lighter moisturizer in the humid summer months.  Even all natural or organic moisturizer can feel like too much if it's too heavy and not right for the season.  Consider using the lighter version of what is already working for you.

Show off your summer glow - Summer isn't the time for heavy foundation.  Or makeup.  Show off your summer glow sans makeup.  Or, if you just can't go out without, try limiting your makeup to just mascara, a little blush (cream blush works great in summer) or bronzer, and some sheer lip color or lip balm.  Try a natural lip color with zinc in it to protect your lips from the sun.  If you feel like you need something on your face to even out the color, try a mineral foundation powder for sheer coverage that lets your summer glow show through.  Since mineral makeups often have zinc in them you'll also get some light sun protection without having to be slathered in sunscreen all day.  Summer makeup should be about looking fresh and healthy, not covered.  Heavy makeup just looks out of place in the summer, whether you're at the beach or in the mountains.

Body lotion - Don't give up your body lotion during the summer, just switch to a lighter one.  Increased shaving of your legs and swimming in salt water or chlorinated water all contribute to dry skin.  So keep moisturizing.  Or, if you'd rather skip lotion try organic coconut oil for a subtle glow and smell of the beach.

Fragrance - Are you one of those people who hates to leave the house without fragrance on? Or who likes to have a light, beachy fragrance on vacation? Skip the toxic chemical perfumes and switch to a light citrus-based certified organic perfume made with natural oils and essential oils.  Or, mix a couple drops of essential oil in with your coconut oil for a personalized and totally safe aroma.  For a beachy fragrance try mixing frangipani and jasmine.  Other great oils for summer include lime, sweet orange, rose, geranium, or ylang ylang.

Stay Hydrated - In the summer heat it's easy to get dehydrated.  Keep your reusable water bottle with you.  Keeping hydrated will help both your health and your skin. If you feel like you need a little extra hydration on your skin, consider a hydrating mist.

Sun protection - Don't forget to protect your skin from the sun when you are out for extended periods.  Getting exposure to the sun is good.  Getting burnt is not.  Avoid sunscreens with chemical sun barriers and titanium dioxide.  Consider adding an organic antioxidant powder to your daily diet to help prevent free radical damage that comes from burning in the sun and to help heal if you do.

With some subtle changes to your skin care regime and makeup summer is a great opportunity to let your natural beauty shine through!
