Intense Heat Wave Grips Large Portion of US

heat-wave-100707-02.jpgDoes the weather feel a little toasty today? Well, you're not imagining it – a huge part of the United States is wrapped up in a heat wave that could break records all over the place.

"Metro areas from Chicago to New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., will all approach 100 degrees even without factoring in humidity," the website AccuWeather.com warns, "meaning heat indices could reach 110 or higher."

While heat waves often happen this time of year, it's important to take care of yourself and loved ones as the week rolls on. If you can avoid being outside, do it, and if your pets can avoid being outside (besides the occasional early morning and evening walks) help them avoid it as well.

Also, just be smart about summer heat – keep yourself and your pets hydrated, cut back on the marathon running, and if you feel dizzy or short of breath, rest and take measures to cool yourself down. Wetting bandanas or washcloths and putting them in the freezer is a cheap and fast way to cool down after a long day – and positioning a fan directly in front of your face (as this writer with no air conditioning is prone to do), helps make those hot nights just a bit more bearable.

And remember – at least it's not 5 degrees and blizzarding outside.
