Former Whole Foods Employee Claims They're Not So Wholesome

Two weeks ago, vegetarians weren't so happy that Whole Foods was behind Meatopia, the so-called Woodstock of edible animals. This week, shoppers have another reason to be wary of the popular natural market after Gawker published a disgruntled former employee's harsh resignation letter.

The letter is pretty epic and long winded - he didn't keep a single complaint to himself, and many of them felt eyeopening, though they should be taken with a grain of salt given his obvious resentment towards the company. Here are some of his most interesting statements ("you" being Whole Foods):

  • "you throw out enough food to feed a lot of hungry university students"
  • "you waste an absurd amount of energy, ink and paper in your offices for useless bureaucratic nonsense."
  • "you sometimes intentionally order too much just to guarantee a full shelf, knowing full well the product will most likely be thrown out"
  • "you purchase products from Israel (Or any distant country) if they're slightly cheaper than local alternatives"
These claims are certainly disconcerting to environmentalists, especially if they shop at Whole Foods regularly and trust that they are doing something good for the planet. While the tone of the letter suggests that this former employee may simply be trying to throw the market under the bus, it would be interesting to hear their side of the story. They are after all a corporate business and ultimately profit is important, but is it at the expense of the environment in some ways?
What do you think - how does this letter make you feel and does it make you question Whole Foods and their practices?
