With energy costs being higher than computing costs in corporate data centers, Samsung has developed a new green memory solution that will allow corporate data centers to cut their energy usage in half. By combining Samsung's green DDR3 (double data rate-3) chip and SSD (solid state drive) chip in server solutions, CIOs can double server performance while cutting power consumption by 90% from current servers. When the Total Cost of Ownership is calculated, this innovation results in a 50% savings in data center electricity usage. This is a significant savings opportunity because energy comprises 75% of data center operational costs.
Transitioning to this green technology also leads to a cleaner environment. If the 9 million servers sold each year utilized this eco-friendly innovation, it would be the equivalent of eliminating 28 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) per year. The GHG savings would be the same as eliminating:
- the CO2 emissions from the electricity used in 3.2 million homes per year or
- the annual GHG emissions from nearly 5 million cars.
The announcement of this green technology was made last week at the Samsung-Dell CIO Forum in Half Moon Bay, California. Samsung utilizes a three dimensional (3D) through silicon via (TSV) packaging technology to achieve the improvements in server energy efficiency. Shortening the signal lines with TSV in semiconductors allows lower power consumption, higher density and better operational speed.
Samples of the new green memory have been released for evaluation. Given a successful prototyping period, Samsung projects that the production phase of these eco-friendly chips could be incorporated in servers by 2012.
