The Challenge: Halloween Can Be Green Without Sacrificing Halloween Fun!

Press Release

For Immediate Release

Los Angeles, California

The spread of Halloween pollution has already started. Go online and Google Halloween costumes and you'll find no less than 10 pages of new articles all about where to buy this year's hottest costume. These costumes will rarely make it back into their closets for next year. Instead they will be thrown away with the rest of the tons of Halloween textile and plastics that overload landfills and pollute the environment.

Los Angeles Costume Swap is bravely challenging the plastic and textile-polluted holidays, starting with Halloween. Inspired by the success of other cities who participatete in National Costume Swap DayTM , created by Corey Colwell-Lipson of GreenHalloween.org® , Los Angeles Costume Swap will show adults, parents, kids and youth community centers how to make healthier and Earth-friendly choices for Halloween without sacrificing any of the fun.

Join Mar Vista Community Council, Mar Vista Farmers Market and Los Angeles Costume Swap on October 9, 2011 for a GREEN-o-ween event. Kids and adults will get the chance to swap new-to-them costumes by recycling gowns, witches hats, masks, clothing accessories and superhero capes from years past. Since new costumes often contain unsafe materials and end up in landfills, the nationwide Swap will help reduce planet stress by 6,200 tons. And that's only if half the kids in America swap costumes!

In addition, Los Angeles Costume Swap advocates crafting, books, safe toys, and healthy or sugar-free trick-or-treat items in place of candy. There will be Goodie Bags, free samples, activities, local Eco-champions and surprises for the entire family!

Free samples include nationally known brands such as Larabars, Honest Tea and Glee Gum. On September 18, 2011 at Mar Vista Farmers Market from 9 am to 2 pm, it's Heroes Day. This will be the official start to letting your kids - and the kid in you - have a little fun by dressing up as your favorite kind of hero: be it a doctor, policewoman, Eco-Warrior or Hollywood character. We'll have a contest for those dressed as their favorite hero, with the winner being chosen by the loudest cheers from the audience and awarded a Hero Package filled with freebies and goodies. Visitors can also get a preview of the Goodies that will be available October 9, 2011 with samples of Glee Gum.

The day will also be an official Costume Swap Drop-Off Day. For more information, visit their website at www.LosAngelesCostumeSwap.com.
