A while back I bought some nettle tea at my local health food store. I bought it because I had read about all the health benefits of nettles, although I have to admit I had forgotten what they were. When I was growing up I only knew them as the stinging plant.
Yesterday I saw a brochure from Frontier Natural Products about nettles so I picked it up to remind myself of the health benefits.
When I got home I opened the brochure and it was all about using stinging nettles for beauty. I had no idea! According to the brochure nettles can be used in hair products, skin lotions & rinses, facial steams and bath products.
Here are some of Frontier beauty recipes using nettles:
Nettle Hair Rinse
This rinse is especially nice for bringing out dark highlights
1 Tbs dried nettle leaf 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1 Tbs dried sage leaf 1 cup boiling water
Place nettle, safe leaf, and vinegar in a non-aluminum bowl. Pour boiling water over the mixture. Steep, covered, for a couple of hours. Strain. Pour over hair after final shampooing, then towel dry.
Stimulating Nettle Bath
Perhaps best enjoyed in the morning, this bath will get you up and at 'em!
1/4 cup dried nettle leaf 1/4 cup dried peppermint leaf
1/4 cup dried lavender flowers 4 cups boiling water
1/4 cup dried rosemary
Combine herbs in a non-aluminum bowl. Pour boiling water over the herbs. Let steep, covered, for about half an hour. Strain and pour liquid into warm bathwater.
I have to admit, I'm excited to try these, especially the hair rinse. I have dark brown hair and I want to see what it does. I'm also excited to see what other ways I can use nettles for beauty. Have you ever used nettles in a beauty treatment?
