Recently I decided to detox with a 24-hour juice cleanse. This was not supervised or suggested by a professional, just something I felt that I needed.

Lately I have been enduring a lot of pain in the ball of my left foot and haven't figured out if the pain is arthritis related or a sports injury. I am a runner and have increased my mileage during my half marathon training, so it's possible I incurred an injury during a run. One thing is for sure, I have noticed an increase in the swelling of my foot and second toe after eating. Since I haven't been able to pin point exactly which food caused my increase in pain and inflammation, I figured a juice cleanse would be just what I needed.

I found this recipe in the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Juicing

Ingredients
  • 4 apples
  • 1/2 butternut squash
  • 1 carrot
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 apple wedges for garnish
Clean apples and cut into sixths. Peel squash and cut into 2-inch cubes. Scrub carrot, cut off top and cut into 2-inch lengths.
Push apples, squash, and carrots through the juicer. Mix the juice and divide into two classes. Add 1/4 tsp of nutmeg and cinnamon to each class. Serve immediately and garnish with apples if so desired.
This juice adds the feeling of fall with it's rich autumn flavors of squash, apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I enjoy this recipe often.
By the end of my day, I had suddenly realized that my pain was nearly gone! Unfortunately it returned the next day after eating some breakfast muffins. Over the course of the past few days my pain has increased and I am noticing it to be after consuming wheat products. So my next detox? Gluten-you can be sure that a follow up is soon to come!

Yummy! Perfect for the season, I'll have to try this one. Wouldn't have thought about juicing butternut squash, thanks for the idea. Today I featured my favorite juicer, be sure to check out the Omega Vert post.
