This weekend is important for every football, sport, and commercial fan in the U.S. It's filled with tons of food, socializing, yelling at the tv, and lauching at some of the most memorable commercials. Those are the thoughts that people have when they hear the words Super Bowl. This year, you might add "green" to those thoughts..
The NFL has taken six major steps in making the Super Bowl less of an impact on the environment:
1. Renewable Energy: The NFL teamed up with the NextEra Energy Resources company to power the Super Bowl with renewable energy. This is actually the fourth year that the NFl has used renewable energy to power the Super Bowl.
2. Tree Planting: The NFL is partnering with the US Forest Service to plant hundereds of trees in South Florida. This partnership has been occuring for the past six years in each of the locations of the Pro and Super Bowls.
3. Recycling: There will be a solid waste recycling effort at the stadiums, media centers, and other event venues for the bowl games.
4. Food Donation: Extra food that is produced and not consumed at the stadiums, will be donated to various local organizations in South Florida.
5. Material Donation: After the games, materials, such as office equipment, building materials, and decorations will be donated through the United Way of Broward County.
6. Finally, the NFL has partnered with the Super Kids/Super Sharing program in which students in local schools gather up thier used books games, and sports equipment to donate to children that wouldn't normally have access to them.
I think its great that a major program like the NFL has taken the initiative to make the small operational changes to reduce their impact on teh environment. Hopefully other organizations can take note from them in creating a sustainable Earth.
