A study conducted by Ipsos Marketing determined that consumers are becoming more aware of how products are packaged. This is changing the way that manufacturers and marketers think about their products. Sometimes the cost of producing the package is greater than the actual cost of the product, which makes no sense. The main budget of a company should be on their product and not on their packaging. The point of packaging is to: protect the product, provide valuable information about the product, and attract customers. The size of the packaging may force a consumer to notice the product, but doesn’t guarantee them to purchase it.
Here are a few easy ways to "greenly" package your products:
1. Use the least amount of packaging possible- Many times we get a product and most of the box if filled with empty space. This is a waste of material and doesn't necesarily attract consumers to your product. A better use of pictures and colors will attract the eyes of consumers, rather than the amount of space the product takes up on the shelf.
2. Replace paper and cardboard packaging with renewable pulp and recycled High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). Both of these are bidegradable and used in many products today. Dell and HP use both of them to package their products. HDPE is used in milk and water jugs, and renewable pulp is used to package a large range of items due to its ability to be easily molded.
3. Be strategic about the package design. With a smaller package to advertise the product on, the design needs to stand out even more. Make use of colors and text on the packaging since money will be saved on the physical package. Put only the most relevant information onto the package.
With these techniques, customers will be able to physically see that your company is helping out the environment. Don’t be afraid to advertise the smaller package, it may end up attracting waste conscious customers that you didn’t have before. Reducing product packaging is a very easy way to cut cost and help the environment.
