Easter Egg Packaging isn't so Egg-cellent

0310Eggs.jpgEaster egg packaging is turning a new leaf in the U.K. In this packaging market there are clear innovative rabbits who lead and slow turtles that haven't quite incorporated the packaging efficiency and recyclability.

Sainsbury's has the most efficiency-packaged Easter eggs for this Easter season. Unfortunately they are the least recyclable. To get efficiency a company must sacrifice recyclability. Other major candy manufacturers and retailers in the U.K. have similar packaging problems and disparities when it comes to Easter candy. These disparities are highlighted in the Easter Egg Packaging: Annual Progress Report 2010.

This is the fourth year of the annual report being published. It is compiled by Dunbartonshire, who has been following Easter egg packaging, because Easter eggs are one of the worst examples of excess packaging that is hitting the supermarket shelves.

The report analyzes eggs from 12 different companies and ranks them based on two factors: The efficiency of how they are packaged and how widely the packaging materials are recycled in the U.K.

Down from last years average packaging volume, the 2010 average egg took up 36% whereas last year it was 39.8%. In 2008 the average egg took up 29.4% of the packaging volume.

The average weight went down by almost 4% this year, compared to 2009 where the average weight went down by one-third.
