West Virginia mine disaster shows high cost of fossil-fuel dependence

coal_deaths.jpgOur continued national addiction to "cheap" fossil fuels is the real culprit of the mine disaters that continue to devastate human lives.

In order to meet the demand for cheap coal for energy production, mining companies cut corners that in very many cases result in the deaths of miners.

The way forward for the people depending upon mining as their career/avocation is to help them with careers in other alternate renewable energy jobs. Clean energy jobs, wind project development and solar technology research and development can provide part of the solution.

"The choice is ours:" said Jon Gensler, a former Army captain studying for a master's degree at Harvard Kennedy School and MIT School of Management, "We can choose to take the lead in a cleaner, safer energy economy, or we can condemn the people of West Virginia, Applachia, and America to relive the tragedies of our past," said Jon.
