Thank You For Being Greenwalas!

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been getting quite a few emails that have been very positive about what we are doing here at Greenwala. I thought I would take a moment on Earth Day and talk to you all about some of those questions and take a moment to thank you for joining and for my team here for the great job that they do.

Here are the Top 3 questions I get on a regular basis:

  1. What does Green mean to you?

That's the thing, Green is a very broad term. To some it just means do the things that prevent/minimize Global Warming. To others it is something else. To me at the end of the day, Green means to do the right thing. That inherently in our lives we need to take steps that not only reduce the impact of Global Warming, but also take into account that by living healthier, reducing our dependency on foreign oil and to behave responsibly from a corporate perspective, we will solve the problems we face one step at a time.

  2. Why did you start Greenwala?

I wanted to Green my life more. My kids were learning about it in school and I discovered that I had a long way to go. I started to read about the issues and got really passionate about the fact that many of our issues are inter-related. That if we solve for one issue like reducing our foreign oil thirst, we actually create a domino effect that affects all walks of our life. In addition, I became enamored with the idea of Social Entrepreneurship - Do Something That Will Make a Difference. That whole idea made so much sense to me that I can't imagine ever doing anything different.

  3. What can I do to "Go Green?"

First of all, remember that it is a journey. You need to have a plan that will get you to your green goal. If you try to green everything over night you will fail and no you don't need to own a hybrid car to be green, it definitely helps though. If you are a novice, meaning you are just starting to embrace this concept, then focus on these three things: 1.) Drive less - Take a bus, ride your bike, carpool or see if your employer will let you work from home once in awhile. 2.) Eat less meat and try to shop at farmer's markets. It's healthier and reduces the need to truck in meat and vegetable products. Can you be a vegetarian 1 or 2 days a week? 3.) Apart from changing your light bulbs to CFL's which many people do and understand, you should put in a simple water filter at your sink and eliminate the need for plastic water bottles. You can buy a canteen (over at the Greenwala Marketplace - Products). Wink

We are not done with the site. The team is working hard on some enhancements, as well as a cool platform that we think will allow you to get more engaged. Keep the emails coming and feel free to reach out to me at RK@greenwala.com. Please help us by spreading the word and add your voice to the discussion.

Members far and wide, this is precisely the reason why I believe in Greenwala. By taking this journey together and learning from one another (along the way), baby steps will morph into strides and before long, we'll actually be able to see proof that our modest personal efforts are making a difference on a broader scale. "Going Green" is subjective -- it IS what you make it. If you are a part of this community and actively engage with others on a regular basis, I really believe that the process of greening your life will absorb into your subconscious. It's not about sacrifice, it's about adjusting our mindsets and determining how we can realistically apply it to our lives. Whether you choose to make a daily commitment to respect Mother Nature or you are somewhere else on the greenification scale, what matters most of all is that you're HERE and you want to LEARN!! More power to the walas.

The summation of the Chief Greenwala and Elizah Leigh's comments are very well put. To my network of contacts, when I explain about the aims of 'greenwala', after a sentence or two I am done defining Greenwala. I, now, have a good format as a guide to educate others on the meaning of being 'Green'. I think this is a very important piece of information to get people to think about how they could go about doing things in life. My core group of friends(4-6) are quite conscious about living a 'green' philosophy. But there are others who could use a bit of reminding to "Going Green". Thank you Chief Greenwala and Elizah Leigh for providing me with good information about 'Being Green'.

Greenwala certainly sends the right message about living green-consciously. You have one key player who deserves kudos - I applaud Eliza Leigh for her efforts. Her writing is thought provoking, entertaining and her enthusiasm about green living/healthy living has caused me to rethink many things I placed on the back burner. If every new greenwala member received a link to her blog, I am certain more people would turn their thoughts into action!

Thank you for the props -- I am humbled. It's actually pretty fantastic to have a fan club! More than anything, I am enthusiastic about the fact that something I wrote was able to ignite a transitional spark within you. We all have a voice on this social network and like you, I've definitely found myself intellectually stimulated by what others have contributed. I get excited about discovering what interesting new bits of information I can glean from the greenfeed and absolutely love peeking inside members minds via their posts. This environment is what we make of it, but to find out that it's helped you to achieve your ah-ha! moment is incredibly fulfilling to me. :)
