Happy Earth Day everyone!
I wanted to introduce you to a amazing company. Terra cycle Inc.

TerraCycle Inc is paying you to send them your trash. Yes, I said it. Your trash. Do you buy a lot of drink pouches, cookie wrappers, Frito Lay chips, Kashi, Cliff bars, Bare Nakes, wine and yogurt? If you do, they will pay you for each one you send them. TerraCycle makes products from our waste. Its an amazing company that I could go on and on about.
They pay 2 cents-25 cents per item. Depending on which item you send them. This is a great way to teach your children how to reuse things. Maybe the kids can send their trash in, and then buy a item from the company. Just think of all the questions your little ones will come up with. This company is going to be huge and im supporting them all the way.

I'm so glad that you wrote about Terra Cycle. I've mentioned them in several of my older blog posts, but their efforts bear repeating. They are demonstrating first-hand that every little wrapper that we keep out of the waste stream makes a difference, but they do so much more. How about wine cork recycling and organic worm poop fertilizer? Talk about thinking outside of the box!

Wow Nancy and Elizah! I has no clue something like this even existed. Thank you both so much for making recycling even more appealing!

I've found that the TerraCycle site is pretty spotty on their connections. Sometimes I can get on their site but even then it takes forever to actually browse the site. Any hints on what to do?

You are so right about that. I just tried to log onto their site three times in a row and kept getting "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" messages. I've accessed their site multiple times in the past without issue, but if you've ever been on it before, it does look like it could use a little va-va-vooming. Maybe we should send them a friendly message (when their site comes back up) letting them know that we'd love to support their efforts but have had challenges with actually logging on. Tom Szaky, the owner, is a young and progressive ecopreneur who I'm sure would appreciate the feedback.

I just found out that TerraCycle plans to fuse consumer-recycled Oreo and Chips Ahoy cookie wrappers into sheets of waterproof fabric which they will then transform into umbrellas, shower curtains, backpacks, place mats and other repurposed and practical items. What a clever way to offer perpetual advertising opportunities to Kraft while still turning waste material into kitshy products that consumers will gobble up. They've been turning South Beach, Clif Bar and Balance brand energy bar wrappers into backpacks, messenger bags and purses for a while now, but I like the diversity of the new products that are on the horizon for TerraCycle shoppers. Still, there's nothing quite like their woom poop fertilizer "signature item" (packaged in recyclable soda bottles).
