Everyone
knows that KFC and Burger King are like, one step away from consuming raw lard
and fat, but did you also know that they're aiding in the destruction of
Indonesian rainforests?
According
to Greenpeace, companies like Walmart, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts and KFC are
aiding in the deforestation of both the Bukit Tigapuluh Forest and the
Kerumantan peat forest in Indonesia by continuing to do business with Sinar Mas
and it's subsidiary, Asian Pulp & Paper.
Even
though it's illegal under Indonesian law and Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had
recently vowed to "reduce greenhouse gas emissions by deforestation,"
Sinar Mas continues to mine prime rainforest land for paper and palm oil.
Sinar
Mas is a giant distributor that provides goods for many, many large
corporations, but after the evidence came out detailing the amount of damage
being done in Indonesia, companies like Kraft, Kimberly-Clark, Nestle,
Unilever, Staples, Office Depot and HSBC have all either stopped doing business
with Sinar Mas or have threatened to do so if their practices don't
change. But Walmart (which seems
to pride itself on it's wholesome image), hasn't uttered a peep either
way. The famous coffee, chicken
and burger chains are in the same boat.
While
not even the knowledge that the Bukit Tigapuluh is "one of the last areas
where critically endangered" Sumatran tigers and Orangutans live, or that
the peat forests of Indonesia are a huge "repository of stored carbon in
the soil," have caused these large franchises to demand Sinar Mas change
it's ways, hopefully the good people of Greenpeace will be able to shame them
into pulling out.
...Okay, so maybe that's a long shot,
but the more we pass this information around, the more people can knock on the
doors of Walmart and Dunkin Donuts and tell them to shape up - or lose their
business.
