With every oil-related disaster that takes place the inevitable seems to become increasingly clear -- we must decrease our dependency on oil as a primary source for energy. But who wants to drive around in a small, sissy-looking, 0 to 60 in 300.4 seconds hybrid or EV?

Enter the GlideX2020 by Rui Gou.

The GlideX2020 is a concept vehicle that is designed to run on electromagnetic roads in China. Sound like science fiction or something straight out of iRobot? Not at all. MagLev (Magnetic Levitation) trains are a very real, not to mention widespread, means of transportation in much of the developed world. But a big reason that alternative energy technologies aren't already growing by leaps and bounds is because the infrastructure to support them isn't yet in place.

So for the GlideX2020 to become a reality, roads would need to be retrofitted embedded electromagnets.

What else is hindering large scale adoption of more efficient vehicles? Most of them are just downright ugly. Yanko Design says,

"These automobiles are made to speed. And on the power of magnets, they shall. But how do they work, these cars? Magnets are difficult to understand, right? No way, what are you thinking? This isn't magic. It's science! And it's Chinese! Yes, this car right here is meant to play a large part in the gigantic burgeoning Chinese economy by (in 10-15 years time,) playing a role in the environmental, economic, and cultural wave-like revolution! "

This concept design also features an intelligent skeleton integrated into the body to assist driver's behavior, a portable auxiliary power unit, and a Li-ion battery. If we're using Back To The Future II as a point of reference (which I try to do in all life scenarios), we shouldn't need roads at all by 2015. So are electromagnetic roads that far of a cry by 2020?

I leave you with this epic quote from Dr. Emmit Brown, "Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads."
