"The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced a $50 million funding program for farmers to make the switch to organic.
In an effort to encourage the nation to go organic a portion of the funding will be available to every state for farmers to apply for funds under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, administered by USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Growers must apply for the funds before May 29, and the money will pay for practices that include rotating crops, growing cover crops, managing pest and nutrients, and controlled grazing.
This is great news for the future of food production.
"The USDA funding is historic. It signals federal recognition of the multiple contributions organic agriculture makes to the health of our environment. Better water quality, enhanced biodiversity, protection of bees and other pollinators, and increased carbon storage in our soil are all benefits of organic production," said the Organic Farming Research Foundation's Senior Policy
Analyst Mark Lipson."
I think this is a wonderful incentive for farmers to go more green. In the long run it is going to pay off for them to start being a bit more green now since most of America is starting to learn about the benefits of going organic not just with our bodies but with the environment too, so in return those farms that take up Obama's offer will gain more customers.
