A lot of people complain about kids these days, and how it seems like they can't go five minutes without texting someone or signing onto Facebook (honestly though, how many adults can go five minutes without doing those things?), but a few summer camps around the US are doing their part to prove our kids are still very much interested in the outdoors – some just need help discovering it.
Thanks to TreeHugger.com, parents and kids alike can now discover 7 "green" summer camps that are dedicated to redefining what it means to enjoy the outdoors.
Camp Trinity on the Bar 717 Ranch in Hayfork, CA isn't your traditional sleep away camp. Sure, it has common activities like arts and crafts and a ropes course, but a stay at Camp Trinity also includes learning skills like blacksmithing, baking and organic gardening. Imagine starting school in September with the knowledge that you made your own horseshoes…by hand? That's got to be awesome.
Camp Lovewell in Nashua, NH (can I get a holla for my home state?) is another great "green" summer camp. In addition to learning orienteering (outdoor guide and leadership skills) and farm animal care, campers spend a lot of time inside their "LEED-certified building that runs on solar and geothermal energy."
Another great nature-loving camp is Islandwood in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Campers learn about the naturalist lifestyle while hiking and creating art projects on a 225-acre campus, and older campers can participate in a backpacking expedition that spans 12 miles through the Olympic rainforest.
If your child can't seem to rip themselves away from their video games or computer, maybe you should consider one of these 7 great adventures for them next year – you never know when blacksmithing could come in handy!
