Nature News Round Up for Friday, July 30th

main_dog_10.jpgIt's been a wild week in the world of nature news - let's take a look at some of the bigger stories happening around Greenwala...

Even though there wasn't a lot of coverage on the BP oil spill this week (or rather, any breaking news), a new oil spill in Michigan had a lot of people worrying about the Talmadge Creek (where a pipe burst and began spewing crude oil on Wednesday) and the Kalamazoo River.  Luckily, the Michigan spill has already been contained and clean-up is underway.

In case you were thinking of hitting the beach this weekend, here's a look at some of the cleanest, and some of the dirtiest, beachs in the US.

When it comes to weird nature news, two stories are vying for top honors:

The first story concerns shrimp and Prozac.  Scientists have discovered that when swimming in water coated in fluoexetine (the main ingrediant in Prozac), shrimp tend to display signs of reckless and even suicidal behavior!  We gotta wonder how much this study should concern humans...

The second weird nature news story is all about a man, his dog, and church.  Apparently, many Anglican Christians were outraged when a Toronto-based priest let the man's 3-year-old German Shepard "participate" in Communion.  What's so wrong with allowing man's best friend into the house of God, anyway?  I mean, we all know what God spelled backwards is...

And last but not least - think vegitables have no place in morning smoothies?  Think again!  Combining 1 veggie with a bunch of fruit is a great way to get your greens without even really having to taste them!
