Are you ready for the weirdest story you've heard all week? Because it's coming. It's right here. There's no way you've heard of anything stranger. I guarantee.
Jerry Douthett of Rockford, Michigan knew something was wrong with his foot for a long time, but didn't do anything about it. It wasn't until his wife, who is also a nurse, talked him into making an appointment that Douthett actually got around to calling a doctor.
[This is not the weird part of the story.]
The weird part begins the night before Douthett was supposed to go to the doctor's. For reasons not disclosed, Douthett thought it would be a great idea to go get wasted. He did, and then came back home and passed out – like you do after drinking all night.
This is where things get interesting.
Jerry and his wife have a dog, a terrier to be exact. The morning after Jerry passed out, he awoke to "the terrier ... beside him in bed and lots of blood was where his toe used to be."
Yup. Jerry's dog ate most of his toe. Why? Well, it's not one hundred percent clear, but after the Douthetts went to the emergency room, they discovered that Jerry had a bone infection caused by diabetes and doctors quickly amputated the rest of his foot.
A lot of people think animals, dogs in particular, have a special kind of sixth sense, so perhaps Jerry's terrier knew something was up and wanted to get Jerry off his ass and to the doctor's as fast as possible – and what better way than to eat a toe? Whatever the reasoning, Jerry and his wife believe their dog saved his life.
It's a heartwarming story to be sure, but if I were them, I'd wear socks from now on.
