Steven Hawking Continues to Depress Us: "Long Term Survival" Not Possible on Earth

main_hawking_0.jpgSteven Hawking must be getting bored these days. Why else would he be talking about aliens and the imminent destruction of the planet?

Hawking recently commented to the website Big Think that we should stop focusing so much on fixing up earth, and start setting our sites on other planets. Why? Well, because the earth is going to explode soon.

"We are entering an increasingly dangerous period of our history," Hawking explains. "If we want to survive beyond the next century, our future is in space."

According to the famous astrophysicist, "long-term survival" just isn't possible on planet earth. No mater how much we recycle or compost or use green light bulbs, at a certain point, it's not going to matter. Mars, or some other planet we have yet to explore, is ultimately the answer.

But while we're exploring space, we have to make sure we don't interact with aliens, because Hawking is also concerned that any ET's we come into contact with will probably do us more harm than good.

I know he's trying to help and all, but does anyone else get the feeling that Hawking is sort of a glass half empty kind of guy? I get the fact that space exploration is important, and yes, someday, I'm sure the earth will no longer be the best place to live – but if you're gonna point out the problems, could you perhaps also provide just a little hint of a solution?

I mean, maybe he is. I don't know what Steven Hawking does all day. But honestly, the more gloomy his outlook, the less likely people are going to be to listen. It's just human nature. Give us some good news – or at least, news that doesn't involve the imploding of planet earth.
