Timberland has been hard -- but quietly -- at work in greening their products and their image. Their ever-increasing number of Earthkeepers products (now at 50+ items) isn't enough for Timberland. As GreenPacks.org reports,
For the past three years now, The Timberland Company has been rating the environmental impact of some of its products. This means that the company's index keeps tabs on the percentage of recycled, renewable and organic materials used in a shoe, checks how much greenhouse gas is produced, what hazardous chemicals are used and how much etc. This information is then on the tags for customers to see so they know how green the product is.
After three years of successfully implementing this on certain products, Timberland has announced that they plan to expand this Green Index to all of their footwear by the year 2012. The company and almost 200 other businesses across the industry are working with the Outdoor Industry Association to help formulate and industry wide Eco Index. This Eco Index will initially be used internally by manufacturers to aid designers in taking eco-friendly choices, and eventually hopes to give shoppers a new qualitative factor to choose between brands.
I've always thought that it makes sense for the Sports and Outdoors industry to lead the charge into a more sustainable future. I'm glad to see Timberland taking such big steps (no pun intended) to not only minimize their own impact, but to lead their industry into a whole new level of eco-friendliness as well.
