Organic Foods: Fab or Fad?

produce.jpgAs naturally as I attempt to live my life, whether I am travelling or sitting down to breakfast, I often wonder about this organic food "fad." As a former vegan and long time vegetarian, I know that there are a lot more healthy foods out there than most would care to imagine. However, most people simply think "organic" when it comes to inviting over/feeding a veg*an (vegetarian/vegan) in their home. But are organic foods really better for you? Why? I had to do my research.

The Diet Channel defines organic foods as "food that is grown or raised without chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers."  Sounds good to me! Because I don't eat meat, I have to look elsewhere for my protein and vitamin intake, and I have become very conscious of what goes into my body. I personally think that that thought process should extend to omnivores as well, and I've found that in the Organic Food run.

According to that same website, there are four big reasons to eat organic: taste, avoidance of toxins, extra vitality, and passion for the welfare of our planet. People should be more conscious of what goes into their body, if they are truly into being natural, healthy, and happy. Organic foods are healthy (though pricey, in the present economy), and give Americans a reason to become more health conscious and live better. That could never be a bad thing in my book.

A friend told me once that having no opinion is a way of having one, but I am still confused on the organic issue. However, my verdict is that anything that is natural and is going to help Momma Nature is a good thing. Whether or not this "fad" stays in our good graces remains to be seen; but, in the very least, people are beginning to care more, for each other, animals, and their Mother Earth. Peace will never be a fad.
