The Ugly Truth About Plastic Bags
According to ReusableBags.com, there are some ugly truths that we all must realize in order to move forward in creating a sustainable Mother Earth for our future. A great place to start with a small change that will have a huge impact is stopping our consumption of plastic bags. Here are some facts that can help you see the cause for change:
- Single-use bags made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) are the main culprit. Once brought into existence to tote your purchases, they'll accumulate and persist on our planet for up to 1,000 years.
- According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. An estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make that many plastic bags.
- Plastic bags cause over 100,000 sea turtle and other marine animal deaths every year when animals mistake them for food.
- According to the WSJ Target, the second-largest retailer in the U.S., purchases 1.8 billion bags a year.
- The average family accumulates 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store.
- Each high quality reusable bag you use has the potential to eliminate an average of 1,000 plastic bags over its lifetime. The bag will pay for itself if your grocery store offers a $.05 or $.10 credit per bag for bringing your own bags. Breaking the "Plastic-Bag-Habit!"

As we make our choices each day to go green in small ways, one of the changes that I have enjoyed making is switching to reusable bags.
I've found that over the last few years a few key tips have made the transition easier. Here are my tips for breaking the "plastic-bag-habit":
- Choose a style and color that you love
- Store a few in your car or bike
- Give one as as gift to your favorite ecodiva
- Choose high quality bags that with reinforced seams
- Plan shopping trips ahead of time
- Keep your shopping list IN your reusable bag
- If you forget...don't sweat it...just use it next time
The Fashionable EcoDiva Solution
One of my tips for breaking the "plastic-bag-habit" is to choose a bag that you LOVE. Speaking for myself, this can raise the probability of you wanting to use it.
