Green Bedroom Decorating for Teens

Decorating a teen's bedroom can be wrought with challenges from the start.  There are always complications when combining the sage advice of a parent with the ever changing mind of a teenager.  One thing that most teens and parents can agree on, however, is the idea of decorating the bedroom in an eco-conscious manner.  Most teens are very aware of environmental concerns and look for ways to reduce their own carbon footprint.  By offering them a chance to bring that responsibility into their bedroom, you may finally have a decor that you can both agree on.

Nature Inspired

A bedroom decor that is grounded in inspiration from nature is a great place to begin.  While it does not have to include copious amounts of butterfly wall art or frogs dancing across the bedroom walls, it does have the potential to be anything from whimsical to authentic.  Have the teen select the style that she likes and go from there.  For more formal decors, try adding vinyl wall art that is cut in the shape of trees or birds.  If whimsy is more her style, fluttering butterflies and cheerful flowers might be more appropriate.  As tempting as it might be to select the style yourself, let the teen choose her favorite decor first.

Fabrics

Teens typically like bold colors and bright fabrics.  Turn those likes into appropriate and eco-friendly bedding choices by investing in organic cottons and other natural fibers.  Polyester or acrylic knit blends may be more economical, but for the environmentally conscious bedroom decor, natural fibers are the only way to go.  Beyond the bed, curtains and chair fabrics or slipcovers can also be found in natural materials that are both good for the teen and good for the planet.

Flooring

For a total room makeover, rip up the old carpet and replace it with bamboo flooring.  Bamboo is one of the most sustainable resources in the world and can provide a beautiful and durable floor.  If the flooring is going to remain intact, try adding a comfortable, natural fiber mat or rug by the bedside for flair and fun.  The addition of the natural fibers will enhance the eco-friendly theme of the room.

Wall Decor

Teens love hanging posters and artwork on their bedroom walls.  The latest rock stars in life-size posters are often hung next to 3d metal wall art that they created themselves or found at an out-of-the-way store that caters to eclectic tastes.  Teens are, if anything, very particular about their changing tastes and when it comes to what is hanging on their walls they are no different.  Let the teen choose metal art work that they enjoy looking at, or wreaths made from sticks and twigs for a completely natural look.

Together, you and your teen can create a green inspired bedroom that she is sure to love.  Remember to focus on eco-friendly fabrics and furnishings that are made from renewable resources.
