The Company - GreenSmart

About the brand in their own words: After making bags since 1995 in the same manner as every other supplier in the world under the brand name Shoreline, with the same basic materials available at that at time, we decided to take a fresh look at aligning the ethical social practices of our Company with ethical product materials and manufacturing practices. As the specifiers of everything that goes into every product we made, we chose to hold ourselves accountable for the actions of our suppliers working on our behalf and for the consumers who did not know any better when they purchased our products. That was 2006.

From that period forward we began the transformational process of replacing product materials with eco-conscious materials, teaching our retail customers about the materials, phasing out existing products and materials. What we did was nothing short of a do-over. Within 30 months, we had converted our supply chain to greener processes, greener materials and greener thinking.

We are just beginning. Our primary objective with every product and material we make or use is eco-progress. There is no eco-perfect and we are not perfect either. We plan to continue to improve. We started with our practical usage of rPET polyester derived from the recycling of PET water and soda bottles, and in 2009 our introduction of neogreene, neoprene reinvented. We think there is no limit as to the ways GreenSmart may be able to bring greener choices to you. We can barely wait to see what is next.

The Bags
The very first thing you notice about the GreenSmart bag is the material. It is sturdy, bright and looks as if it will carry your stuff in iron-clad protection for years to come. Oh, and it's also very cool and stylish. With multiple strategically placed internal and external pockets, the GreenSmart bags would be perfect for school,  travel or even an on-the-go durable diaper bag for mom or dad. I would have loved a bag like this when my kiddo was tiny.

The Puku bag that I got to try out has one very cool feature, as do all of the other GreenSmart bags. It's made using 30 recycled plastic bottles. I have to say. Knowing that fact did make me proud to where it. I love the fact that that my bag was created using a process to weave plastic bottles into a durable bag derived 100% from plastic bottles. My bag keeps 30 bottles out of the landfill. What can your bag do?

Don't forget to check out another one of my GreenSmart faves, the Wine Tote.

I learned that the plastic bottles (ie:water bottles, etc. That we use) are taken from our bins/trash and compacted into little cubes that are then washed twice and turned into PET flakes which are then turned into a fiber to be made into fabric.

I learned that recycling the PET bottles can make the PET flakes which can either be used for more bottles or fiber to make the bags. Each yard of fabric saves 18 bottles from the landfill.

I learned that it seems to take a lot of energy to make this product. I don't like people to use plastic bottles at all but if they are going to I am glad that it can be made into things like bags, and even yarn! i never knew

I learned from the video that PET Flakes can be used to create a new plastic bottle or into fabric or into yarn. They can be used to make bags or carpet. I "Like" GreenSmart on facebook too. email: lila221lilac@yahoo.com

I learned that the small plastic ring and the label are removed through the first phase of "washing." I always thought that those items were just recycled along with the bottle! melissa@ecohomeconsults.com

Liked GreenSmart on Facebook (Priceless Writers). Watched the video, which was very informative in such a short amount of time. I learned that bottles taken to recycling centers are ground into a material that is called PET flake. It can then be ground finer to make "yarn" and fabrics. You also save water and energy through this recycling process. Email: yona(at)pricelesswriters.com
