Have you ever taken your bike to stock up on groceries? To pick out a new computer? To take your dog to the vet? Unless you can fit all those items in the flowered, wicker basket between your handlebars, chances are high that you usually take the car no matter how close that destination may be. If you live in an area conducive to bike traffic, having a bike trailer might be a nice way to get outside while you move around town for those daily errands. Here are five products that can help make those trips a little easier:
1) For Kids
Have your kids in tow, literally, when you head out to lunch or to drop off mail at the post office. The kids will enjoy the ride and you will get a chance to work in some exercise during a busy day, and even work on your tan. Trailers range in price from around $110 for your basic model to as high as $825 for a convertible model ready for biking, jogging, or even cross country skiing.
2) For Dogs
Take your pooch to the pet store or the dog park in one of these trailers made just for your best friend. Great for puppies and aging dogs that can't handle longer walks and also a convenient cargo trailer for when Fido is back at home. Trailers range in price from $170 to $380.
3) For Kayaks
Next time you head to the park or beach, don't go through the hassle of strapping that heavy kayak to the top of your car: just place it in your handy kayak trailer. This product for the outdoorsy type is great for those of us who would much rather feel the wind in our hair than sit inside a stuffy car. Trailers range in price from $200 for one kayak to $600 for a custom-made double-decker.
4) For All Cargo
These general-use trailers are perfect for groceries, gardening supplies, or anything else you may need to bring back from the store. Models range from flat bed trailers to covered containers, as well as one wheel or two. Trailers range in price from $200 to $400.
5) For Smaller Cargo
If you are ready for a major change to your bike, check out the Xtracycle FreeRadical. This bike upgrade lengthens your bike to include room for storage or even an extra passenger for short trips. If you are fairly crafty, or have a little help from a bike mechanic, you can convert your bike in a few short hours. The whole kit is $400, or you can build your own base kit at $225.
