Small hand grenades used by India's security forces in the remote Northeast to control insurgencies and crowds that get out of control will be modernized with the help of Mother Nature.

The bhut jolokia chili -- one of the world's hottest at 1,000,000 heat units on the Scoville scale -- is soon going to be powdered and used inside of grenades in lieu of traditional explosives to dissipate riots and other potentially dangerous situations.

Amazingly, the weapons won't kill anyone...but boy will they hurt. The bhut chili, which is said to be approximately 1,000 times hotter than its conventional counterparts, can startle people due to its sheer heat generating properties and intensely pungent scent.

A senior scientist at the state-run Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) confirms that they are considering other defense applications for the bhut, but in the meantime, they have found it useful when soldiers are in extremely cold climates since it naturally raises body heat. Yowch!
